Zelenskyy Presses for European Support, Security Guarantees
(MENAFN) Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy held back-to-back phone calls on Tuesday with Norwegian Prime Minister Jonas Gahr Store and European Council President Antonio Costa, pressing for stronger European support in Ukraine’s defense and integration into the EU.
According to a post on Telegram, Zelenskyy said his discussion with the Norwegian leader centered on takeaways from Monday’s high-level talks in Washington with US President Donald Trump and top European officials. The Ukrainian president underscored what he called a significant development: progress toward establishing lasting international security guarantees.
“We are confident that peace can be reliable and lasting, and security guarantees are the key to this,” he stated, adding that Norway and Ukraine will deepen cooperation, especially in the energy sector.
In a separate call with European Council President Antonio Costa, Zelenskyy said the recent Council meeting, which focused on the Washington dialogue, marked “an important step toward ending this war and ensuring security for Ukraine and the whole of Europe.”
He confirmed that groundwork for the EU’s 19th sanctions package against Russia is actively underway. “Pressure must be increased until Russia takes real steps to stop the war,” Zelenskyy emphasized.
He also urged for continued unity among EU members regarding Ukraine’s accession, highlighting the importance of opening negotiation clusters and maintaining momentum on membership talks.
The conversations follow Zelenskyy’s Monday visit to Washington, D.C., where he met with Trump and European counterparts to discuss a long-term peace framework with Russia. Trilateral negotiations are expected to continue, including talks with Russian President Vladimir Putin.
